Types of Colostomy

Colostomy

A Colostomy will differ depending on the section of the colon that is dissected. The are three types of colostomy:

Sigmoid Colostomy

  • It consists of the dissection of the terminal colon (the end). It may include removal of rectum and anus.
  • The stoma protrudes on the abdomen's lower left side quadrant.
  • Secretions are compact.

Descending Colostomy

  • It includes the sigmoid section above plus a portion of the descending colon. It may include removal of rectum and anus.
  • The stoma protrudes on the abdomen's lower left side quadrant.
  • Secretions are less compact.

Transverse Colostomy

  • It is the most traumatic colostomy. It covers the two above, resection of sigmoid and descending colon, plus a section of the transverse colon. It may include removal of rectum and anus.
  • The stoma may protrude anywhere along the line of the upper abdomen.
  • Secretions are paste like.
